Via Garibaldi and the Rolli
Via Garibaldi is the most elegant and imposing street in Genoa. It was laid out in the mid-1500s to house the palaces of the richest families in the town.
Palazzo Bianco (White Palace) and Palazzo Rosso (Red Palace) both host museums by the same name today. Their collections include paintings by Genovese artists like Bernardo Strozzi and Luca Cambiaso but one can also admire masterpieces by Caravaggio and Flemish artists like Van Dyck and Rubens.
The residences in Via Garibaldi are part of the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli. In this system are gathered the most beautiful homes spread throughout the Historical Centre. In 2006 UNESCO proclaimed these palaces a World Heritage Site.
