Via San Lorenzo
Via San Lorenzo is one of the most important streets in the Historical Centre. It cuts through the old town from Porto Antico to Piazza de Ferrari. Halfway up one finds the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. This was built starting from 1100. The façade has black and white horizontal stripes. This is a typical decoration of many constructions in ancient Genoa.
Continuing up via San Lorenzo one arrives in Piazza Matteotti. The space is dominated by the façade of Palazzo Ducale, (Doge’s Palace), from which the doge governed the town. It was built starting from the 13th century and the Torre del Popolo (People’s Tower) dates back to this period. The current aspect of the palace is due to modifications in the 16th century. Instead, the façade onto Piazza de Ferrari was built in the early 1900s. In the rooms of Palazzo Ducale important exhibitions and shows are held.
