The Staglieno cemeteryThe monumental cemetery of Staglieno is really an open air museum.
Starting from the mid-1800s the rich bourgeois Genoese families started to a decorate their funeral monuments with marvellous statues. Some tombs are capped with beautiful angels. In others the deceased is shown with his or her family. The inscriptions point out the religious values, dedication to the family and to work.
Among the famous Genoese who lie at rest in Staglieno one could mention Giuseppe Mazzini, Gilberto Govi and Fabrizio de Andrč. But one of the most famous statues is that of the commoner Caterina Campodonico, created in 1881. Caterina sold peanuts on street corners. She spent all her savings to be remembered with a monument worthy of the beauty of Staglieno. Her statue is today one of the best loved.
